WEEK 2 RECAP: Buccaneers 24 - Falcons 9

Just some disorganized thoughts before I break the game down tomorrow: plenty of blame to go around for this one, but I found myself irrationally furious over one particular screw up in the 4th quarter, on Graham's long TD run, when Jams both gave up backside contain AND missed the key tackle on EG. The guy doesn't use his hands effectively even when he gets tackles, and when he does concentrate on using his hands, his feet stop moving. Kid's got a long way to go.

Lawyer Milloy made some plays near the line of scrimmage but was constantly getting caught out of position in the passing game. The Cover-2 requires some versatile safeties and Milloy just doesn't have the range to play his deep zone and still be effective in the box. I don't mean to single him out since there were certainly worse defenders in this game, it just made for a stark contrast with Tampa Bay's incredible secondary.

Baker left the game in the first half with a concussion; Todd Weiner took his place for the rest of the game. No word on Baker's status yet but this is unsettling stuff for the team's de facto impact rookie.

I'm not yet sure what I thought of the gameplan/playcalling, I'm gonna need to take a closer look at the game this week. On the first Falcons possession they passed three times in a row, Ryan getting picked on the third attempt. That pretty much set the tone for the remaining 4 quarters of play, especially when it was made brutally apparent that Tampa wasn't going to let them run the ball. Ryan had to throw into the teeth of the Tampa-2 while enduring constant harassment from Kiffin's mad scientist pressure packages, all without a running game or a left tackle who could pass protect.

Babs and Abe had awesome games, especially Babineaux; his quickness on the inside made him a constant challenge for the interior o-line. These are the kinds of performances he busts out every once in a while that make you really buy into him as an every-down starter. Abe had a forced fumble and a sack, both great effort plays.

The receiving corps, like the rest of the offense, started out slow but Laurent Robinson ended up having a really nice game at split-end; I'm guessing that he's gonna see more snaps at the position than Jenkins in games like this, where Jenkins' downfield run blocking (and his shittiness as a receiver) isn't much of an asset.
