Overcoming BEAST MODE

The Bills are in a funk, Rian Lindell missed two FGs and for some reason their coaching staff felt JP Losman would be useful in the passing game as opposed to doing what he did best last Sunday -- hand the ball off to Marshawn Lynch. Regardless, the 49ers did just enough to not lose a road game in shitty weather against a team fighting for a playoff spot and a win is a win so fuck it 4-8, baby!

Mike Singletary is in the midst of a season-long job interview to be head coach beyond this year's interim status and honestly, I have no clue which direction the Niners should go.

On one hand, Mike Singletary is a Mike Nolan protege and he definitely proved that when he got impatient and called timeout with 16 seconds before the half for a FG (when he could've just had time wind down so the field goal attempt would be the last play of the half). Nolan did the same thing last year against the Cardinals and the time we gave Arizona put Kurt Warner the position to score before the clock ran out. He also defended not jamming Terrell Owens last week even though the whole league does it successfully, saying that it was a personnel issue and not a strategy issue. Singletary also said that the Niners performance last week was the most solid a team had played against the Cowboys in years (WTF?!). Both bitch moves that Mike Nolan was notorious for during his tenure here as a sharp-dressed buffoon.

On the other hand, if Snagglepuss Martz didn't brainfart the end of the Cards game then we'd be 3-1 after the bye week and the players are definitely playing more cohesively with Sing on the sidelines. A lot of that can be attributed to Martz improving his overall play-calling (his Snagglepussiness notwithstanding) and the fact that Shaun Hill is a perfect game manager QB in that he is not spectacular by any means but he also doesn't make stupid mistakes.

Another optimistic issue coming out is that Jed York, insufferable prick owner John York's son, seemed to inherit his Uncle Eddie's panache and is a lot more willing to go the extra mile to bring this franchise back to respect(at least from what little we've been exposed of him). God, I miss Eddie D and I know most Niner fans do. Everytime an old Niner's number gets retired, Candlestick chants HIS name as opposed to Ronnie Lott's or Steve Young's and no one gets offended. If Jed York shows a modicum of Eddie's bravado and awesomeness then it's a large step into bringing back the culture of winning.

I understand this is the same song-and-dance optimism and pining that Niner fans turn to every year as we hope-upon-hope that things get better. It happened when Erickson got canned, it happened when we upset the Broncos in Week 17 two years ago and it happened last year when Patrick Willis won Rookie of the Year. Next year, if we are 4-12 and I am drunk-dialing Roger Craig I'd still find a way to pinpoint a silver lining but this year is different. Whether or not Singletary keeps the job we're moving in the right direction, I can feel it. At least until next week when we realize we can't play JP Losman every week.
